Can cutting tool inserts reduce the formation of burrs during machining

Cutting tool inserts are a type of cutting tool that is used for a variety of machining applications. Many manufacturers use cutting tool inserts to reduce cost and improve the accuracy and quality of their machining processes. But can these inserts also reduce the formation of burrs during machining?

The answer is yes. Cutting tool inserts are designed with sharp cutting edges that can minimize the formation of burrs. The sharper the cutting edge, the less material is left behind when machining, and the less material there is to form a burr. This is especially true of inserts made from harder materials such as carbide or ceramic. Additionally, inserts with a positive rake angle can help reduce burr formation by allowing chips to flow out of the cut shoulder milling cutters more easily.

However, it's important to note that the use of cutting tool inserts alone is not enough to completely eliminate burrs. Proper machine setup is also important. This includes ensuring that the cutting tool is properly aligned to the workpiece, and that the cutting speed and feed rate are set correctly. Additionally, using a lubricant or coolant can help to reduce friction, and thus reduce burr formation.

In conclusion, cutting tool inserts can help to reduce the formation of burrs during machining. However, proper machine setup and the use of a lubricant or coolant is also important for achieving the best results. With the right TCMT Insert combination of these factors, burr formation can be greatly reduced.

Ceramic Grades for Super Alloy Turning Operations

The WIX10 and WWS20 complementary ceramic grades from Walter are designed for turning high-temperature super alloys such as Inconel, Waspaloy, Stellite and other heat-resistant materials that can create create greater stresses and increased wear in carbide tools. The two grades are silicon-nitride-based, with the WIS10 grade consisting of Sialon ceramic and the WWS20 with silicon-carbide whiskers.

The WIS10 grade features a self-reinforced structure of silicon nitride ceramic and enhanced chemical stability for notch wear resistance. The grade can be used in applications ranging from light Lathe Inserts roughing to semi-finishing operations.

The WWS20 features silicon carbide whisker fibers to better resist fractures. It is designed for turning forged or cast out-of-round workpieces with uneven surfaces or heavy interruptions. The grade is also suitable for use with the high-feed rates required when removing large amounts of material, and for turning hardened steel.

Walter offers both indexable ceramic turning inserts in the negative basic shapes C, D, R and S, and positive basic Carbide Turning Inserts shape inserts in RC and RP format. All are available with different cutting edge designs. Toolholders with carbide shoes and clamping systems are also available for turning, and can accommodate cutting speeds as fast as 1,350 sfm.

Platinum Tooling Becomes Distributor for Rev Broaching Tools

Platinum Tooling, an importer and distributor of live tools, angle heads, speed increasers, Swiss machine products, knurling and marking Tungsten Carbide Inserts tools and shrink-fit toolholders manufactured by various international suppliers, will now carry Rev broaching tools in North America.

Rev S.R.L., located in Northern Italy, is the manufacturer of broaching solutions for CNC lathes and machining centers. The tools are ideal for machining simple keyways or internal and external profiles, both teeth and splines. Common profiles including square and hexagon are said to be easily achieved and custom profiles are available. According to the company, Rev broaching tools are designed to provide excellent performance with long insert life and high surface quality.

The Rev motorized broaching tool is designed for use on live-tool lathes. Single machine setup eliminates the need for secondary operation or outsourcing. Rev tools are ideal for high production runs, offer easy installation tube process inserts and fast processing time. These tools are designed for maximum rigidity, offer long tool life and an excellent finish.

Rev static broaching tools are for use on CNC lathes with or without a Y-axis. They offer a patented eccentric bushing, which eliminates alignment errors for machines without a Y-axis. The tools have a sturdy two-piece construction and are ideal for smaller runs. They are designed for use in boring bar holders on lathes and for use in collet chucks or Weldon holders on machining centers. Rev tools enable machining a wide variety of standard and custom profiles and sizes.

Platinum says that Rev broaching tools complement the Heimatec live tools that are sold its network of manufacturers’ representatives and distributors throughout North America.
